X-Ray

An X-ray uses a painless beam of high-energy radiation to produce images of organs, tissues and bones. At Trinity Health Michigan, we combine the latest technology with exceptional, people-focused care. Our team offers the full range of X-ray services for all ages, from newborns to older adults.

We welcome walk-ins or you can make an appointment for your convenience.

We offer the latest X-ray technology with the lowest doses of radiation possible. When you choose a Trinity Health Michigan imaging center for your X-ray, you receive:

  • Expertise: Our experienced X-ray technologists focus on the highest quality care. Every technician is specially trained to collect clear images and help you or your child feel comfortable during the test. Our board-certified radiologists study and interpret your X-ray, so you get the most accurate results.

  • Safety: Our commitment to patient safety goes above and beyond the standard. We follow national Image Softly® and Image Gently® safety practices, which aim to minimize unnecessary radiation exposure.

  • Convenience: In most cases, you don’t need an appointment for general X-rays. We welcome walk-in appointments at any of our locations. If you need a fluoroscopic X-ray, we schedule and perform the test within 24 hours (excluding holidays and weekends). We provide prompt results to your physician.

X-ray Services We Provide

Whether you have an injury or illness, we provide the right X-ray for your needs. Some of the most common X-rays we perform include:

  • Abdominal X-rays to view organs and structures in the abdomen (belly area)
  • Chest X-rays to check for pneumonia and other lung conditions in adults and children
  • Extremity X-rays, including arm, leg, hand and foot X-rays to diagnose injuries or health conditions
  • Joint X-rays, including knee and hip, to look for signs of arthritis or joint damage
  • Neck and spine (back) X-rays to diagnose spinal conditions or injuries after an accident

How to Prepare for Your X-ray

Most X-rays do not require special preparations. Here’s what to expect at your X-ray appointment:

  • You may need to change into a hospital gown or drawstring pants.
  • Your technologist may ask you to remove jewelry, eyeglasses and hair accessories.
  • We give you a contrast agent (dye-like substance) if your provider requests it. This substance may be an intravenous (IV) line that we place in your arm or a liquid you swallow.

X-ray Process for Adults

X-rays are painless and usually take only a few minutes to complete. However, X-rays for complex conditions or that require a contrast agent may take an hour or longer. During your X-ray, your technologist:

  1. Helps you position your body for clear images
  2. Uses pillows or soft sandbags for your comfort
  3. Asks you to remain still and hold your breath for a few seconds while we take the pictures

Your Child's X-ray

If your child needs an X-ray, we may use techniques or equipment to help keep them from moving during the test. These will not harm your child, and we take extra steps to help your child feel as calm as possible. Holding still during the X-ray is important because we need to repeat the test if your child moves.

In most cases, we allow parents or caregivers to remain with their child during the X-ray. Your child’s technologist will provide you with a lead apron to wear. This apron shields you from unnecessary radiation exposure.

After Your X-ray

General X-rays have no side effects, so you can typically resume your activities after your test. If you received an injection of contrast and are experiencing pain, swelling or redness at the injection site, contact your physician immediately.

Getting Your Results

One of our skilled board-certified radiologists reads and interprets your or your child’s X-ray images. In most cases, we send a detailed report to your referring provider within two days. If you have not received results within five business days after your exam, contact your physician’s office.
