Our dental residents enjoy an outstanding opportunity to develop their knowledge and skills working with exceptional attending dentists and dental specialists.

Program Mission

Our mission is to train competent, knowledgeable, proficient practitioners in the field of general dentistry who compassionately serve diverse patient populations in our community by providing appropriate, safe and quality care.

Program Aims

We aim to ensure that the graduates of our program will achieve the following competencies:

  • Continued development of the knowledge and skills required for all procedures performed in general dentistry today
  • Apply professional and ethical principles, as demonstrated through good patient and practice management skills
  • Be proficient in assessing a prospective dental patient’s physical status, and understand any medical diagnoses that could potentially impact the dental treatment plan.
  • Be able to utilize all available resources with emphasis on the application of evidence-based information, to assure safe and effective treatment for each patient
  • Be capable of treating the dental needs of all general dental patients in a hospital setting. This includes inpatients, outpatients, emergency department patients and those patients with special needs. Be knowledgeable in the protocols of providing dental care in the hospital setting.
  • Serve as the coordinator for the patient’s dental treatment. Be competent in the examination, diagnosis, analysis and treatment planning for the dental patient, utilizing medical and dental specialists as necessary.
  • Be an advocate for oral health through understanding the barriers to dental care, the needs of the community and the important role that a dentist plays in the health care team.

In 2018., St. Joseph Mercy Oakland (now Trinity Health Oakland) was honored to receive the Robert Sosnick Award from the Jewish Fund of Metropolitan Detroit for our work in providing dental care for those with barriers to finding dental treatment.
