Serving Michigan

Transitional Year

Welcome to the Trinity Health Livonia, Transitional Year Residency Program. Our Transitional Year Residency Program is a fully accredited one-year intensive training program by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). The objective of the Transitional Year is to provide a well-balanced graduate medical education in multiple clinical disciplines designed to facilitate the choice of and preparation for a specific specialty. Internal Medicine is our sponsoring program for the Transitional Year.

The Trinity Health Livonia Transitional Year Program is designed to fulfill the educational needs of medical school graduates who:

  • have chosen a career specialty for which the categorical program in graduate medical education has, as a prerequisite, one year of fundamental clinical education (this education may also contain certain specific experiences for the development of desired skills)
  • desire a broad-based year to assist them in making a career choice or specialty selection decision
  • are planning to serve in public health organizations or on active duty in the military as general medical officers or primary flight/undersea medicine physicians; or
  • desire or need to acquire at least one year of fundamental clinical education before entering administrative medicine or non-clinical research

Program Mission Statement

Our mission to produce well rounded residents who have balanced experience in variety of clinical settings prior to entering advanced residency programs. We want to emphasize scientific knowledge, the scientific method of problem solving, evidence-based decision-making, a commitment to lifelong learning, and an attitude of caring derived from humanistic and professional values in our graduates. Beyond training in fundamental clinical skills, the Transitional Year program promotes intellectual curiosity and discovery through tailored elective choices, leadership and teacher development through resident directed core conferences, and a diverse culture.

Program Vision Statement

To be the Transitional Year Program of choice in Southeast Michigan for residents that have matched into Advanced Specialty Programs and offer a well-balanced clinical experience.
