NICU and Special Care Nurseries

No parent wants to hear that their baby needs special care. But when you do need it, we are here — with advanced medical care in a warm, compassionate environment.

Trinity Health Michigan birth centers have the expert care your baby needs, close to home. Each hospital has either an on-site, Level III neonatal intensive care unit (NICU, often pronounced “nick-you”) or dedicated transport to a nearby NICU.

NICU and Special Care Nursery at Trinity Health Michigan: Why Choose Us?

Our physicians, nurses and medical staff are ready to care for premature babies (preemies) and newborns with health conditions. Our care includes:

• Highly skilled medical team: Our NICUs are staffed by an expert team, including neonatologists (specialists in complex newborn care), advanced neonatal practitioners, specialized NICU nurses, therapists and social workers. This team has the expertise to treat the most fragile preemies and newborns, including those that need advanced life support. They also provide care and support for the whole family.
  
  
• Pre-birth planning: During your pregnancy, our providers monitor you and your baby for health issues. If our team thinks your baby may need a NICU, we coordinate your delivery at a hospital with a NICU and prepare our team for your baby’s arrival. Learn more about our prenatal care.
  
  
• NICU transport: If your delivery hospital doesn’t have a NICU and your baby needs one, our team is ready. Our dedicated NICU transport service quickly and safely takes your baby to the closest NICU. Our NICU transport includes breathing support, a fluid-filled warming mattress and one-to-one monitoring with a highly trained NICU transport team.
  
  
• Support: We help ease some of the anxiety that comes from having a baby in the NICU. Some of our locations offer a parent-to-parent program where you can meet parents of babies who “graduated” from one of our NICUs. We also host educational events and monthly lunches so you can receive helpful information and get a much-needed break.
  
  
• Special care nurseries: Some of our locations without a NICU have a Level II special care nursery, which provides extra care for babies born after 32 weeks. Our special care nursery team closely monitors preemies and newborns and is prepared to transport them to a NICU if needed.
