SJMHS Regional Wellness Run - April 25, 2015
This year’s 5K was the biggest yet with over 200 participants joining together to celebrate health and wellness. The event is part of a system-wide “Join Me” initiative to motivate southeast Michigan to get moving, change attitudes, and inspire people to choose a healthier lifestyle. Saint Joseph Mercy Health System has a vision for a stronger, more active community, and events like this are great ways to get people moving in the right direction.
Although St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor may have had home field advantage, they were awarded the much anticipated honor, the Wellness Cup, for the highest level of participation. Also in attendance were colleagues from each RHM, Trinity Health, IHA and the community.
This was the first year the event was held on a hospital’s campus with the race starting and ending at The Farm. Participants enjoyed the paved walking paths alongside St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor’s beautiful wooded campus. Immediately following the 5K, many participants enjoyed touring the hoophouses and snacking on refreshments.
The event began with a pre-race warm up organized by Dan Wolocko, St. Mary Mercy Livonia, MercyElite Sports Performance. He led participants in numerous exercises that helped prepare them to perform at their best.
For the fifth year, Lila Lazarus emceed the event and recognized the attendees’ commitment to wellness. Rob Casalou, Regional President and CEO and Nancy Graebner, President and CEO, St. Joseph Mercy Chelsea also made opening remarks. Lila and Nancy then completed the course with fellow participants.
Nancy Graebner, President and CEO of St. Joseph Mercy Chelsea, thanked the many volunteers, sponsors and the Regional Wellness Committee for making the annual event a success. “The colleagues and family members who came out is truly wonderful and sets a great example for our community,” she said.
Across our health system, we are engaging in creative wellness programs to be healthy, fit and more productive. The annual 5K is a staple event for our organization and continues to be successful and grows larger each year.
“The idea behind our ‘Join Me’ campaign is it’s tough to eat healthy and exercise, said Rob Casalou. “We need a support system and events like these bring co-workers, friends and families together.”
