ST. JOSEPH MERCY HOSPITAL RECEIVES AN “A” FOR QUALITY AND SAFETY
Port Huron, MI…St. Joseph Mercy Port Huron (SJMPH) is pleased to announce it received an “A” grade in the “Hospital Safety Score”, Fall 2013 update. This national LeapFrog Group (LeapFrog) score rates how well hospitals protect patients from accidents, errors, injuries and infections.
The “Hospital Safety Score” is compiled under the guidance of the nation’s leading experts on patient safety and is administered by Leapfrog, an independent industry watchdog. The first and only hospital safety rating to be analyzed in the peer-reviewed Journal of Patient Safety, the score is designed to give the public information they can use to protect themselves and their families.
Calculated under the guidance of Leapfrog’s Blue Ribbon Expert Panel, the “Hospital Safety Score” uses 28 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to produce a single “A,” “B,” “C,” “D” or “F” score representing a hospital’s overall capacity to keep patients safe from preventable harm. More than 2,500 general US hospitals were assigned scores this fall. St. Joseph Mercy was one of two hospitals in St. Clair County to receive an “A” grade.
“We are pleased to be recognized for our leading patient safety practices by industry experts,” comments Fran Parrish, RN, Director of Quality, Patient Safety and Regulatory at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital. “Working in a focused way to ensure patient care and safety, we are keenly aware that patients take an active role in selecting where they receive their care. That’s why independent scoring of this type is so important and remains a priority in our organization.”
This news comes on the heels of announcement from two other nationally renowned organizations honoring the work of St. Joseph Mercy Port Huron with awards for its quality patient care and safety. In September 2013, Consumer Reports magazine awarded St. Joseph Mercy with an “Above Average” rating for surgical services, the highest rating in the community. This rating reflects the percentage of Medicare patients from 2009 to 2011 who received outstanding post-surgical care.
And, only last week, The Joint Commission honored the hospital with its Top Performer on Key Quality Measures® award highlighting St. Joseph Mercy Hospital’s ability to attain and sustain excellence in accountability measure performance for heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia and surgical care.
“With a continuing focus on Safety & Quality: Every Patient…Every Time, we are extremely pleased with the dedication of both our clinical and physician staff who work every day to provide the best care to our patients,” comments Rebekah Smith, RN, President and CEO of St. Joseph Mercy Hospital. “These awards, including this LeapFrog Grade A, are a testament to the importance of a unified commitment to elevating the health status of our community.”
