ST. JOSEPH MERCY PROVIDES EDUCATION AND ASSISTANCE TO NAVIGATE THE HEALTH INSURANCE MARKETPLACE
Port Huron, MI…As a part of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), requiring all US citizens and legal residents to have health insurance in 2014 or face an annual tax penalty, a large segment of St. Clair and Sanilac county uninsured will be able to select a health care plan that better fits their budget when Michigan’s new Health Insurance Marketplace opens on Tuesday, October 1. This new marketplace provides insurance programs covering essential health services at lower premiums and out-of-pocket costs, and also includes tax credits. Beginning October 1, access to the marketplace is available at the following website address: www.marketplace.cms.gov.
During this unique enrollment period, St. Joseph Mercy Port Huron (SJMPH) is available to educate consumers about the benefits of the new law and help the newly insured with affordable plans both locally and on a nationwide basis.
“Health reform is complicated and people are trying to understand the right thing to do for themselves and their families,” explains Rebekah Smith, RN, President and CEO, SJMPH. “Throughout the process, our goal is to help consumers in our community to understand that we are committed to meeting their needs as they relate to access to health care during this confusing time.”
At the Health Insurance Marketplace, individuals can compare insurance options based on price, benefits and other features that may be important to them. All plans are provided by private insurance companies, not the government. Michigan’s online Health Insurance Marketplace is set up as a federally facilitated exchange. St. Joseph Mercy will accept a number of marketplace options. A special website has also been set up, dedicated to helping patients navigate what those options may be.
The site also contains videos, a cost calculator and a live chat option with a patient financial counselor. To learn more visit, www.mymercy.us/aca-port-huron. Consumers can also call, toll-free 1-855-753-4726. In addition to the website and toll-free phone number, SJMPH has trained financial counselors to help health care consumers in the area maneuver the process.
