Cheryl Canto, MD Named St. Joseph Mercy Patient-Focused Physician
Start Date

June 21, 2013

Port Huron, MI…Cheryl Canto, MD, was named the June 2013 St. Joseph Mercy Patient-Focused Physician. The St. Joseph Mercy Patient-Focused Physician award highlights a physician’s commitment to working collaboratively to promote patient and community health through clinical excellence and patient-focused care. Physicians honored with this award must also be one whom St. Joseph Mercy Hospital staff and volunteers would recommend to family and friends in the community.

A family practice physician, Dr. Canto provides primary care and treatment to patients of all ages through Port Huron Internal Medicine Associates, PC. She was nominated for her ability to work collectively with patients, their families and staff to ensure that everyone is knowledgeable about the issues and plan of care.

“Dr. Canto wonderfully facilitated the care of an extremely medically complex patient and her understandably stressed family,” comments her nominator. “Not only did Dr. Canto provide excellent care, but met with the family to answer their questions and alleviate their anxiety. Her level of commitment to this patient and the compassion she demonstrated was wonderful to witness. In addition to being respectful to both the patient, who had very poor understanding of her situation, and the family, Dr. Canto listened to all concerns and worked with staff to facilitate care. She investigates the situation to find all the answers and her kind manner with patients, families and the entire staff is commendable and is why I would never hesitate to refer a friend or family member to her.”

“Dr. Canto is a terrific asset to our health care community,” states Rebekah Smith, RN, St. Joseph Mercy Port Huron (SJMPH) President and CEO. “Her outstanding performance has been noted by those who work most closely with her and has been highlighted through her nomination. I wish to extend my sincere appreciation to Dr. Canto for providing remarkable medicine, remarkable care and elevating the health status of our community.”

“With teamwork, anything is possible. Teamwork starts with courage, the first baby step; then ambition, the next big hop; and finally fortitude, a great firm leap. Having faith, hope and compassion makes teamwork an effortless, lifelong endeavor,” comments Cheryl Canto, MD. “This vision helps to make all of us – doctors, nurses and allied healthcare professionals – successful in our unified field. I am grateful for this award and share this recognition with everyone at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital.”

The St. Joseph Mercy Patient-Focused Physician Award is designed to highlight outstanding collaboration between our physician community and St. Joseph Mercy Hospital patient care and volunteer staff. Nominations are accepted from all staff and volunteers, and are blinded and reviewed by a Nominations Review Committee. The award is presented routinely to a physician on staff at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital.
