Senior Services

St. Joseph Mercy Oakland (SJMO) is a member of Saint Joseph Mercy Health System, which is committed to improving the health of older adults in all phases of their lives.

SJMO's team of skilled and compassionate physicians, nurses, case managers, pharmacists, rehabilitation specialists and other supportive staff recognize and address the unique physical, emotional and social changes that occur during aging.  We offer a variety of unique programs to keep both mind and body fit, along with treatment for simple to complex health issues.

Michigan’s First Senior ER

Unique in every way

As a member of Saint Joseph Mercy Health System, SJMO was among the first hospitals in Michigan to create a specialized senior emergency department exclusively dedicated to meeting the needs of seniors, generally age 65 and up. Our Senior ER focuses on the cultural and medical skills required to care for the body, mind and spirit, providing an experience worthy of the dignity and respect seniors deserve.

Staffed by specially trained geriatric (senior) emergency care providers, each Senior ER caregiver focuses on care that considers all aspects of a seniors' disease, illness or injury in an environment that optimizes comfort and safety.

Medical Monitoring

SJMO Volunteer Services partners with Guardian Alarm to lease, install and service a Medical Monitoring system that is designed to preserve the independence of seniors and to summon help when needed via an instant communication device.

Also offered is the Guard Angel Lockbox, an outside, secure storage box for keys that provides easy access to emergency responders so that they do not have to break down the door to get into the house.

For information on either of these items, contact SJMO Volunteer Services at 248-858-3035.

AARP Driver Safety Program

SJMO partners with the AARP (formerly the American Association of Retired People) to offer the AARP Driver Safety Program twice each year. The program is designed especially for drivers age 50 and over.  Participants learn how to deal with the effects of aging on driving, identify most common crash situations that seniors face, reduce the chance of a crash, update knowledge of today’s roads and identify when driving may no longer be safe.  Those who attend the two-session course receive a certificate of completion and may qualify for a discounted insurance rate (depending on the company, participants are encouraged to talk to their insurance representative). There is a nominal cost to attend the program, with a discounted rate to AARP members.

Senior Companion Volunteer Program

SJMO offers a SCOPPE (Senior Companions Offering Positive Patient Experiences) volunteer program to help patients on designated medical/surgical units within the hospital. The volunteers help create an atmosphere of welcome and genuine personal concerns for patients and family members, as well as staff.  The Senior Companion volunteers stop in for personal visits with patients to help ease loneliness and provide conversation, social interaction, emotional support and encouragement.

Senior Fit

SJMO sponsors  free Senior Fit program at six sites throughout Oakland County from September through May.  Geared for adults age 55 and up, Senior Fit is aimed at improving stamina, lowering blood pressure and decreasing the risk of osteoporosis among senior adults through regular exercise.  The program uses chair and floor exercises that build strength and flexibility, help maintain strong bones, control body fat, reduce stress and improve an individual’s sense of well-being.  Participants may attend one-hour exercise programs up to three times each week.  The program requires registration, which is accepted every summer for the upcoming session.

Senior Fit sessions are offered in the following cities (each location has limited availability):

  • Auburn Hills
  • Birmingham
  • Pontiac
  • Troy
  • Waterford
  • White Lake

Screenings and Educational Programs

Several times each year, SJMO offers free screening and educational programs of interest to seniors.
