Why choose St. Joseph Mercy Oakland for your mammogram and breast health services?
Not all mammography centers are equal. Although it may be convenient to go to the center closest to home or near your doctor's office, it makes sense to make your decision on where to have a mammogram based on facility quality and available services. Breast care experts at St. Joseph Mercy Oakland recommend that patients choose their mammography center based on quality and the full continuum or resources and services offered to meet their needs.
St. Joe's Comprehensive Breast Center (CBC) was the first in southeast Michigan to achieve the "Triple Crown" of breast care accreditations.
St. Joe's was one of the first mammography centers in the state of Michigan to receive American College of Radiology (ACR) recognition as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence (BICOE), status the center has held since 2007. The BICOE designation confirms that SJMO has achieved excellence in high practice standards in image quality, personnel qualifications, facility equipment, quality control procedures and quality assurance programs.
The mammography center program also holds accreditation by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC), a program administered by the American College of Surgeons (ACS). NAPBC-accredited centers maintain a full range of medical services, along with a multidisciplinary team approach to patient care, ensuring the provision of continuity of care for women with diseases of the breast. Accreditation by the NAPBC is only given to those centers that have voluntarily committed to provide the highest level of quality breast care and that undergo a rigorous evaluation process and review of their performance.
The Breast Imaging Center also has been recognized as a Certified Quality Breast Center in the National Quality Measures for Breast Centers Program™ (NQMBC). This distinguished honor represents a commitment to provide the highest level of quality breast health care to patients in their community. According to the NQMBC, "measuring and comparing quality performance is essential in assessing patient care and allocating resources where improvement is desired. In today's dynamic health care industry, breast centers are faced with providing quality care while simultaneously keeping costs under control. A center's staff must not only be familiar with existing standards of care, but must also be aware of new advances in technology.
St. Joe's CBC has taken a major step to ensure they provide the best possible quality care to breast patients in their community."BICOE, NAPBC and NQMBC recognition comprises the "Triple Crown" of breast care accreditations.
Distinguishing Comprehensive Breast Center Services
Only St. Joe offers the following Comprehensive Breast Center (CBC) services in Oakland County:
MammoPlus® provides a digital screening mammogram, PLUS a lifetime risk assessment for breast cancer. Each patient is offered the National Cancer Institute's (NCI) Breast Cancer Risk Assessment as part of their standard mammography. This tool help gather information and assists in determining if a patient may be at increased risk of developing breast cancer.
There is no additional charge for MammoPlus®. It is simply the St. Joe version of the best mammogram service available. Traditional mammography services are still available if preferred.
Under MammoPlus®, at the time of her mammogram each patient is asked a series of personal health and breast history questions based on the nationally recognized NCI breast assessment tool. If a patient’s assessment score shows an increased risk of developing breast cancer, her ordering physician is notified. St. Joe’s certified genetic counselor calls the patient (upon request) to discuss her score and schedule a more detailed RiskPlus™ assessment.
For more information see MammoPlus® FAQs for Patients.
RiskPlus™ is the follow-up program to MammoPlus®. It is a prevention and monitoring program for women who are noted to be at increased risk of breast cancer on their MammoPlus® risk evaluation. Patients can be referred from their doctor for in-depth analysis and management of their risk profile or they can call directly to request an analysis of their risk, based on family history, disease history or simply heighted concern.
A certified genetic counselor and an advanced practice oncology nurse practitioner manage St. Joe’s RiskPlus™ program. They determine risk and design a customized cancer prevention plan, which may include annual breast monitoring and imaging, clinical exams, specialized breast imaging, genetic testing, risk reduction techniques and other options.

- Provide emotional support and build a relationship with each patient
St. Joe's is the only local hospital that makes nurses available in the mammography area to educate and support patients.
If Breast Cancer is diagnosed, St. Joe has a breast cancer nurse navigator who serves as a personal advocate for breast cancer patients and assists both patients and their family members with various resource needs through their cancer treatment journey. The nurse navigator's responsibilities include:

- Helping to coordinate care, including appointments
- Providing education about both diagnosis and treatment and how to handle side effects of treatment
