Pontiac, Mich.—St. Joseph Mercy Oakland (SJMO), in collaboration with Mercy Home Care, will host support groups for stroke survivors and caregivers at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 13 and Dec. 11, 2013, at the St. Joseph Mercy Oakland Woodward Professional Building, across from the main hospital, 44428 Woodward Ave., Pontiac. Attendees should enter the building at the Rehabilitation Entrance and proceed to the lower level.

Topic for the November support group is "Rehabilitation Tips, Tricks and Strategies for Daily Living."  Facilitator is Jody DiMaria, Director of Rehabilitation Services, OTR/L.  "Coping with the Holidays" will be the topic of the December group meeting.  Rosemary Insley, LMSW, BCC, Bereavement Coordinator, Mercy Hospice, will be the facilitator.

The support groups will focus on:

  • Understanding stroke recovery, rehabilitation and how to prevent a recurrence of stroke
  • Sharing experiences with other survivors and providing mutual support
  • Promoting independence and improving performance of daily living activities
  • Providing a forum where caregivers and family members can share their experience and support each other
  • Offering information to patients on how they can restore their quality of life despite losses and disabilities caused by stroke

The support groups are conducted and supported collaboratively by SJMO and its Rehabilitation Services and Neuroscience Departments, Faith Community Nursing and Mercy Home Care.

The public is invited free of charge.  For more information or to reserve a spot, call 248-858-3295 or email Connie Parliament.

SJMO became Michigan’s first Certified Primary Stroke Center in 2004.  In 2006, SJMO launched the Michigan Stroke Network, a collaboration of more than 30 Michigan hospitals committed to bringing the latest in stroke care to communities around the state.  With telemedicine and real-time audio-visual technology, emergency room physicians at participating hospitals have access 24/7 to stroke specialists at SJMO.
