St. Joseph Mercy Oakland’s Injury Prevention Event
To Focus On Senior Citizen Safety

Pontiac, Mich.—The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that each year, one out of every three American adults aged 65 and over is injured in a fall. St. Joseph Mercy Oakland Trauma Services will address this largely preventable public health problem during its Senior “Fall” Classic, an educational event slated for Friday, Sept. 20, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The event will feature various health and welfare experts addressing topics like injury prevention, as well as related topics like durable power of attorney, medication, medical equipment, physicaltherapy, occupational therapy and more. But the focus will be on preventing falls, since, according to the CDC, falls are the leading cause of injury death, as well as the most common cause of nonfatal injuries and hospitalization for trauma among senior citizens.

There is no charge to attend, and the event is open to both senior citizens and their caregivers. It will be held at the Birmingham Area Seniors Coordinating Council and Center, 2121 Midvale St., Birmingham.

For additional information about the “Fall” Classic, call Jennifer Dixon, SJMO Injury Prevention Coordinator, at 248-758-7065.
