For Extraordinary Nursing National Honor

One Waterford and Two Clarkston Residents Receive DAISY Award
Recognizing Compassion, Service and Excellence

Pontiac, Mich.—St. Joseph Mercy Oakland (SJMO) has named Susan Goebel, RN; and Cindy Dixon, RN, both of Clarkston; and Matt Lyons, RN, ADN of Waterford, recipients of the prestigious DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses. They were recognized for their clinical skills, compassionate care, exemplary service and extraordinary commitment to patient-centered care.

Goebel works in SJMO’s Mother/Baby Unit.  Dixon is a Faith Community Nurse, who provides nursing services in the community.  Lyons serves in the Orthopedics unit at St. Joe’s

“Susan, Cindy and Matt are excellent nurses who always put in 100 percent when caring for their patients,” said Ann McDonald-Upton, Vice President of Patient Care Services and Chief Nursing Officer.  “They are an asset to the hospital and their colleagues. This acknowledgement is the perfect recognition for their continued commitment to excellence in patient care.”

This award is given monthly to outstanding nurses in more than 100 hospitals across the United States.  Each award recipient receives a DAISY Award signature lapel pin, a certificate of recognition and a hand-carved stone sculpture entitled, “A Healer’s Touch.”

The DAISY Award is a program of the DAISY Foundation.  DAISY is an acronym that stands for Diseases Attacking the Immune System.  The DAISY Foundation was established in 2000 by the Barnes family in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, who died from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura at age 33.  The DAISY Foundation funds research to help fight diseases of the immune system and supports patients and their families.

Goebel joined the St. Joe’s staff in 1978.   Lyons came to St. Joe’s in 2007.  Dixon began her affiliation with SJMO in 2005.
