St. Joseph Mercy Oakland To Showcase Newly Expanded Cancer Center At Community Open House

New Center Provides Full Continuum of Services for Patients at Risk for Cancer

Pontiac, Mich .—St. Joseph Mercy Oakland (SJMO) will showcase its newly expanded Cancer Center, including its new Cancer Resource and Support Center (CRSC), at a Community Open House Saturday, April 13, from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The public is invited to tour the center.

The Cancer Center is located in the Alice Gustafson Center on the hospital campus, 44405 Woodward Ave., Pontiac. The Cancer Center is comprised of an expanded Infusion Center for outpatient chemo and IV therapy, a Cancer Resource and Support Center and a physician practice. The expanded center creates an environment of patient comfort and dignity to provide a full continuum of services for patients at risk for cancer, the newly diagnosed patient, those in treatment and those in survivorship.

The Infusion Center relocated into a larger space. It features an environment of tranquil, patient comfort and dignity. Patient chairs are located in comfortable spaces with windows. There are two private chemotherapy rooms for special needs, along with space for family and friends to be with their loved one.

The Infusion Center also offers convenient chair-side oxygen for those who need it. Call lights provide easy access to each patient's personal nurse. While undergoing chemotherapy, patients have access to entertainment and meditation videos, along with health education, personal email and Facebook.

The CRSC will serve as a comfortable, “one-stop shop” for information and education on cancer topics, social support and counseling, and complementary therapies and classes. The focus will be on improving the knowledge and quality of life of patients with cancer, along with addressing each patient's physical, emotional and spiritual needs.

CRSC offerings include:

Educational Resources and Information from the American Cancer Society (ACS) and Lending Library

New Patient Orientation Classes designed to answer questions and address the overall needs of the newly diagnosed cancer patient and their families or caregivers

Nurse Navigators, who serve as personal advocates for cancer patients and assist patients and families with resource needs

Financial Navigator, who assesses financial needs of new and established cancer patients to remove financial barriers to care

Genetic Counselor, who evaluates and communicates the risk of an inherited disease to individuals who are identified as being at higher risk of developing cancer during their lifetime

Survivorship Nurse Practitioner, who develops a post-treatment care plan, offers continued care for side effects and makes referrals

Registered Dietitian for nutrition, who partners with patients to offer individualized nutrition counseling

Integrated Therapy, including a dedicated massage therapy room and Image Recovery space

Support Groups, including breast cancer support and the ACS Look Good…Feel Better program.

Community Forums

The physician practice features an expanded patient waiting area with private spaces and ample room for patients and their families; additional, larger patient exam rooms with better flow, and a private family consultation room.
