St. Joseph Mercy Oakland Awarded Leapfrog Group Top Hospital Designation For Second Consecutive Year

Hospital Honored for Patient Safety and Quality Care

Pontiac, Mich.—St. Joseph Mercy Oakland (SJMO) has been awarded the elite distinction of being named a Top Hospital for patient safety and quality care by The Leapfrog Group for the second consecutive year.  The Leapfrog Group is a national organization comprised of large purchasers of health care whose aim is to initiate breakthrough improvements in the safety, quality and affordability of health care for Americans.

SJMO was selected as a Top Hospital based on the results of The Leapfrog Group’s annual hospital survey, which measures hospitals’ performance on patient safety and quality, focusing on three critical areas of hospital care:  how patients fare, resource use and management structures in place to prevent errors.  The survey results are posted at http://www.leapfroggroup.org/cp.

“This distinctive honor reflects the dedication and excellence of our physicians and associates to provide high quality care, a remarkable experience and the highest levels of patient safety,” said Jack Weiner, SJMO President and CEO.  “Our commitment to patient safety is our top priority, and this recognition reflects our unrelenting focus on implementing health care processes that make care safer and optimize patient outcomes.”  St. Joe is the only hospital in Michigan with both The Leapfrog Group patient safety and quality award and the Truven Health Analytics Top 50 Cardiovascular Hospital designation.

Weiner and Fabian Fregoli, MD, SJMO Vice President-Quality and Patient Safety/Chief Medical Informatics Officer, accepted the award on behalf of the hospital at a special recognition reception in Baltimore, Md.

SJMO earned the Top Hospital distinction for its adherence to Leapfrog standards.  Among them:

  • A hospital must fully meet Leapfrog’s standard for Preventing Medication Errors (Computerized Physician Order Entry--CPOE).  Research indicates that CPOE systems can reduce the number of adverse drug events by up to 88 percent, preventing three million serious medication errors in the U.S. each year.
  • A hospital must fully meet Leapfrog’s standard for Intensive Care Unit (ICU) Physician Staffing.  Mortality rates are significantly lower in hospitals with ICUs managed exclusively by board-certified intensivists (physicians trained in critical care medicine). Research has sown that in ICUs where intensivists manage or co-manage all patients, there is a 30 percent reduction in overall hospital mortality and a 40 percent reduction in ICU mortality.
  • A hospital must fully meet Leapfrog’s standards for high-risk surgeries and procedures.  Hospitals must achieve a score of “fully meet” for 50 percent of the surgeries or procedures that apply. Research indicates that a patient’ risk of dying is reduced by about two-four times, depending on the high-risk procedure, if care is obtained in hospitals that meet Leapfrog’s volume, processes of care and outcome standards.
  • A hospital must achieve a value score of 69 or better as calculated through Leapfrog’s Hospital Recognition Program (LHRP Value Score).  The value score is a combination of quality and resource use.  Hospitals with high value scores have demonstrated both high quality and appropriate resource use.
  • Hospitals eligible for a Hospital Safety Score must receive an A on the letter grades publicly reported at the time of the Top Hospital public announcement.  Last June, SJMO received an A grade for its ability to keep patients safe during a hospital stay.

“The Leapfrog Top Hospital distinction is by far the most competitive award a hospital can receive,” said Leah Binder, President and CEO of The Leapfrog Group.  “Leapfrog holds hospitals to the highest standards on behalf of our purchaser members and their employees.  By achieving the Top Hospital accolade, St. Joseph Mercy Oakland has demonstrated exemplary performance across all areas of quality and patient safety that are analyzed on The Leapfrog Hospital Survey.  This hospital stands out as one consistently providing safe, high quality care.”
