St. Joseph Mercy Oakland To Conduct Support Group For Stroke Survivors And Caregivers
Group to Offer Information on Restoring Quality of Life After Stroke
Pontiac, Mich.—St. Joseph Mercy Oakland (SJMO) will host a support group for stroke survivors and caregivers at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 28, at Mercy Home Care, 281 Enterprise Court, Suite 200, Bloomfield Hills.
Topic for the group’s first meeting is “How to Put Balance in Your Life.” Palma Baker, MA, CCC-SLP, Regional Rehab Manager for Mercy Home Care, will be the group’s first speaker.
The support group will focus on:
Understanding stroke recovery, rehabilitation and how to prevent a recurrence of stroke
Sharing experiences with other survivors and providing mutual support
Promoting independence and improving performance of daily living activities
Providing a forum where caregivers and family members can share their experience and support each other
Offering information to patients on how they can restore their quality of life despite losses and disabilities caused by stroke
A subsequent meeting of the support group will take place at 1 p.m. Jan. 17 at Mercy Home Care.
The support group is sponsored by the SJMO Rehabilitation Services and Neuroscience Departments and Mercy Home Care.

SJMO became Michigan’s first Certified Primary Stroke Center in 2004. The stroke program blossomed in October 2006 into what is now the Michigan Stroke Network, a collaboration of more than 30 Michigan hospitals committed to bringing the latest in stroke care to communities around the state.
