St. Joseph Mercy Oakland Hosts Aarp Driver Safety Program
Program Targeted for Adults Age 50 and Older
Pontiac, Mich.—St. Joseph Mercy Oakland (SJMO) will partner with the AARP (formerly the American Association of Retired Persons) to offer the AARP Driver Safety Program in November. The program is designed especially for drivers age 50 and older.
The eight-hour course will meet for two four-hour sessions from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. Nov. 5 and 6 in the Franco Auditorium in the hospital, 44405 Woodward Ave., Pontiac.
AARP Driver Safety Program participants learn how to deal with the effects of aging on driving, identify most common crash situations that seniors face, reduce the chance of a crash, update knowledge of today’s roads and identify when driving may no longer be safe. Topics to be covered include:
Maintaining proper following distance
Methods of changing lanes and turning at intersections
Negotiating roundabouts
Effects of medication on driving
Limiting driver distractions
Properly using seat belts, air bags and anti-lock brakes
Maintaining physical flexibility
Monitoring skills and capabilities
Over the past 32 years, more than 13 million drivers have enrolled in the course nationwide. There are no tests required. Those who complete the course receive a certificate of completion and may qualify for a reduction on their vehicle insurance premium. Participants should contact their insurance company or agent for more details.
The program is limited to 25 participants. There is a fee for this program: $12 for AARP members and $14 for non-AARP members, which covers all course materials, including workbooks. In appreciation for their dedication and service to our community, veterans and their dependents can enroll free for the November course.
