Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program

The St. Joseph Mercy Oakland Obstetrics and Gynecology residency training program is sponsored by Michigan State University College Of Osteopathic Medicine. It is approved by the American College Of Osteopathic Obstetricians And Gynecologists, and the American Osteopathic Association.

The four-year program puts heavy emphasis on education. We also offer a high volume of primary care, preventive medicine and gynecologic subspecialty patients. All of the subspecialty services are offered on our campus, to include Maternal Fetal Medicine; GYN Oncology; UroGynecology, with the exception of Reproductive Endocrinology, which is provided by a local, high volume practice. We have grown from a 12 resident, to 16 resident program, as of 2008. We accept both OGME1 (Graduating students) and OGME2 (Those having done a rotating internship.).

Our program is very structured and offers residents an opportunity to gain exceptional academic and clinical knowledge. With a level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and a full time Maternal Fetal Medicine physician on staff, our hospital is a tertiary care center for high-risk obstetrics throughout the area.

In October 2009, our new, two-story, 50,000 square-foot Surgical Pavilion opened. It enables us to combine advanced technology with compassionate care to create a unique healing environment. With a staff of over 45 gynecologists performing surgery, some of whom perform robotic surgery (da Vinci), your experience as a resident at SJMO will provide an opportunity to become an exceptioanal surgeon; prepared for today; and ready for the changes tomorrow.

The residency program is part of Statewide Campus System (SCS), which is the post-graduate consortium for training obstetrics/gynecology residents sponsored by Michigan State University.

Applications must be filed electronically through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). To qualify for an interview, you must have graduated from an Osteopathic medical school. Preference is given to candidates who have passed COMLEX Part I and II on the first attempt.

The interview process at St. Joseph Mercy Oakland Hospital is held once yearly. It is a one-day event that encompasses individual interviews and an open forum with residents. Also included are a tour of the facilities and introduction to faculty and staff. Complimentary breakfast and lunch are served. The interview day will typically occur on the second Saturday of November.
