What Makes Us Unique

Sports Medicine
The Livingston Family Medicine Residency program has a robust sports medicine program.  Interested residents cover one of four local high schools through football and wrestling seasons each year with an emphasis on continuity of care.  All residents are required to attend at least one football game annually in an effort to ensure exposure to sports coverage and sideline emergencies/concerns.  Residents are involved in annual pre-participation exams for our local schools.  Other opportunities exist to cover the MHSAA state wrestling meet, Special Olympics and as well as regional events hosted by our local high schools.  There is a sports medicine elective available to interested second and third year residents that includes work with local therapists, orthotists, nutritionists, athletic trainers and orthopedists.  Interested residents can also observe with a covering team physician at local universities, for field hockey, basketball and softball events.  Our weekly teaching sessions frequently include sports and musculoskeletal topics.

St. Joseph Livingston
We are an unopposed program at St. Joseph Livingston which provides residents no competition for procedures and access to a teaching attending.  There is excellent rapport between residents and the hospital staff.

Global Health
From its inception, the Family Medicine Residency program at Saint Joseph Mercy Livingston Hospital has recognized the importance of serving the disadvantaged both in the United States and abroad. This includes a solid knowledge base of local diseases and culture, the skills to provide medical care, education and social support and the attitudes to be open, professional and caring for a diverse population. Residents who choose to participate in this program will have an opportunity to work with diverse populations locally and on international experiences.

Some examples of recent experiences are:

  • September 2010 Haiti. Four residents and two faculty members provided medical services to the hurricane stricken Port-a-Prince and Legone communities in collaboration with   Heart to Heart. A video from Jason Beatty, DO conveys his thoughts of the experience. Click here to watch the video.
  • March 2011 Guatemala. Three residents and two faculty members again joined forces with Heart to Heart to provide primary care services at a developing medical clinic in Pantanatic.
  • November 2014 Philippines. Two residents and a faculty member will travel to the Philippines to provide primary care services in underserved clinics.

The Livingston Farm
The Farm at St. Joe’s Brighton is the newest crop in town! Dr. Tom Longley, Dr. Amy Berke and fellow residents from Livingston Family Medicine Center have started a farm at St. Joseph Mercy Brighton.  The first seedlings were planted Saturday, May 24, 2014, by residents, their families and volunteers. They planted herbs such as, basil, cilantro, rosemary and thyme. They also planted several types of lettuce, spinach, mammoth sunflowers, broccoli, arugula, peas, bush beans, peppers and tomatoes.  Harvests from the farm are given free of charge to patients of our family medicine center.

Integrated Primary Care
St. Joseph Family Medicine provides integrated primary care.  Integrated Primary Care is the model for providing collaborative, interdisciplinary services to patients in the primary care setting.  At the St. Joseph Mercy Family Medicine Residency program, we have a psychologist, a psychiatrist, and social workers available to see patients with physicians to provide coordinated care regardless of ability to pay. This interdisciplinary team is educational for both patients and physicians in highlighting brief methods to assess and manage the complex bio-psychosocial problems that often present in primary care.

Physician Wellness
Importance of Physician Wellness. Physician wellness is a big deal. We now know that when physicians are not well, it affects that physician's life, work relationships, and patient care. We take physician wellness seriously at the St. Joseph Mercy Family Medicine Program by offering team building, socialization, an educational workshop on health promotion, and individualized resources as needed. We make physician wellness a part of the everyday conversation.  There is a physician wellness committee through SJMH-Ann Arbor that coordinates sports leagues and volunteer activities like Habitat for Humanity for interested residents.

Our Office is a Patient Centered Medical Home.
