 Scientific curiosity is a characteristic that is part of the professional life of a physician. Our faculty demonstrates this through their involvement in clinical research activities. These faculty members serve as role models for residents in training as they learn the value of research and participate with the faculty in clinical research projects.
Sharon O’Leary, M.D., Obstetrics & Gynecology Residency Research Director, was selected to be an APGO-Solvay Scholar. She is the first physician educator from an independent academic medical center to receive such an honor. As part of her scholarship, she is conducting research on the efficacy of educational methods in teaching medical students. The considerable skills she has developed in this project will serve to enrich the research activities at Saint Joseph Mercy Health System.
Areas of active investigation include:
- An observational study of obstetric-related lower extremity nerve injury to determine the prevalence, etiology, and natural history of these injuries
- Assessment of the use of CPAP in the delivery room for low birth weight infants
- An evaluation of the effects of an environmental toxin on male fertility
- Comparing the changes in symptoms, quality of life and patient satisfaction following uterine artery embolization, hysterectomy, and myomectomy for the treatment of symptomatic uterine fibroids
