Chief Residents - Three people are chosen annually to remain with the residency program as “chief resident” for one additional year after completing residency. The chiefs share multiple roles and responsibilities, including teaching, scheduling, inpatient rounding, problem-solving, and acting as liaisons between house officers and attending physicians. The chief year is a great opportunity to improve teaching skills, to increase medical knowledge base, and to gain valuable clinical experience.

Historically, the subspecialty faculty at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital have been outstanding supporters of the residency program. The Hospital itself provides exposure to all specialties and subspecialties, but the relative lack of fellows allows residents first contact with the subspecialist for procedures and teaching. Furthermore, all of the subspecialists have active, busy clinical practices, which allows for superb outpatient experiences and significant clinical mentorship. There are also numerous ongoing clinical research projects in the subspecialty departments to augment training as well as for those seeking further post-residency subspecialty training.
