Our goal is to recruit individuals who are committed to excellence in patient care. The freestanding, fully accredited five-year general surgery program presently graduates six senior residents per year. There exists a tradition of excellence in the program that we are committed to perpetuating. Over the years, the residency program has consistently filled with excellent candidates. Graduates of the program have likewise established an outstanding record in passing the examinations of the American Board of Surgery and in going on to fellowship training.
The department of surgery educates junior and senior medical students from the University of Michigan Medical School, University of Toledo College of Medicine and Wayne State University School of Medicine on rotations throughout the year. Almost all of the faculty surgeons hold teaching appointments at the University of Michigan School of Medicine, the University of Toledo College of Medicine, and Wayne State University School of Medicine.
St. Joseph Mercy Hospital is also unique among community hospitals in the commitment of the faculty to the hospital and its programs. We provide general hospital care as well as specialized referral care to a large surrounding population base in Southeastern Michigan.
Approximately 20,518 operative procedures are performed annually at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, which include 4002 general surgery operations. There is extensive experience with trauma victims as well as peripheral vascular and cardiac surgery patients. Over 31182 patients are discharged annually.
All residents gain operative experience in the Ambulatory Surgery Facility (ASF) where 7162 cases are done annually, 1678 of these cases are general surgery procedures. These patients have surgical procedures not requiring lengthy post-operative observation and skilled care.
The leadership of the department is committed to new initiatives including the implementation of a formal minimally invasive training component to the general surgery program, as well as development of a surgical critical care service. We are also proud to be in full compliance with the ACGME mandated duty hour restrictions.
