Jeffrey Sanfield, MD, FACP

The Chairman of the Department of Internal Medicine, Dr. Jeffrey Sanfield, served as the program director of the residency prior to assuming the role of Department Chair. Having received many honors and awards over the years, Dr. Sanfield was named "Top Doc" in the Detroit area, and voted as a "Top Doctor in America" by Consumer Checkbook, both of which speak to his passion for patient care. A practicing endocrinologist, he has been a strong advocate for the residency program. His reputation and respect within the institution have also helped expand the role of the residency program.

Thomas Shehab, MD, MMM, FACP, FACG

The Vice Chair of the Department of Internal Medicine, Dr. Thomas Shehab, is a gastroenterologist by training and completed his residency, chief residency, and his fellowship at the University of Michigan Health System. He also completed a Master’s in Medical Management at Carnegie Mellon University. His professional interests include resident education, the interactions between sub-specialists and primary care physicians, and developing the next generation of physician leaders. His primary research and clinical interests include hepatitis C and colon cancer. Dr. Shehab has been instrumental in building the research program at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, and is an avid supporter of resident and faculty research.

Susan Hickenbottom, MD, MS, FAHA

The Vice Chair of the Department of Internal Medicine, Dr. Susan Hickenbottom, is a neurologist by training. She did a Preliminary Year of Internal Medicine at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital and her Neurology residency at the University of Michigan, followed by a fellowship in Stroke and Cerebrovascular Disorders at the University of Texas—Houston. She also completed a Master’s in Clinical Research Design and Statistical Analysis at the University of Michigan School of Public Health. Her professional interests include resident education, quality and safety, and improving the medical care of older adults. Her research interests include acute stroke management and quality of care in stroke. Dr. Hickenbottom has been a strong advocate for the residency program.
