St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor opens new Outpatient Surgery Center and hybrid operating rooms
First outpatient surgery to take place June 3

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – (May 16, 2014) – St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor has opened a new 43,000 square-foot Outpatient Surgery Center which features state-of-the-art technologies such as scope video integration equipment, LED lighting and nine operating rooms nearly double the size of its previous operating rooms to accommodate today's surgical team, equipment and technology.

The $32 million all new state-of-the-art Outpatient Surgery Center will become the main outpatient surgery location, replacing the current Ambulatory Surgery Facility (ASF) and Michigan Orthopedic Surgery Center (MOSC) on campus.

"We understand surgery is a major event in the lives of patients and their families, and we want to make it as comfortable and convenient as possible so they can get back to their normal routines," says Suzette Bouchard-Isackson, RN, MSN, vice president, surgical services, St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor and Livingston hospitals.

Another feature of the project is the addition of an innovative Hybrid Operating Room located in the main operating room of the hospital for patients who require cardiovascular procedures employing both traditional surgical and minimally invasive surgical techniques with high definition imaging. Opening July 8, this advanced operating room will allow cardiothoracic and vascular surgeons, cardiologists and radiologists to collaborate using techniques that require multiple specialties. A patient whose treatment requires these techniques may be able to have their procedures done on the same day without having to leave the operating room and wait for future operating room time to become available.

"If a patient needs a coronary stent as well as minimally invasive bypass surgery, for example, the cardiologist and cardiac surgeon can work together so the patient has one combined procedure," said Walter Whitehouse, Jr., MD, chairman of the department of surgery and medical director of surgical services. "This will be a great benefit to patients by reducing the number of times they have to go under general anesthesia, decreasing the risk of infection and enhancing recovery time."

Adjacent to the DeWeese Surgery pavilion, the Outpatient Surgery Center is connected to the existing hospital surgery facility to share efficiencies such as surgical staff, equipment and supplies while maintaining a separate main floor entrance with accessible parking.

"Because our Outpatient Surgery Center is connected to the hospital where patients can stay overnight if necessary, we tend to see more complex cases than freestanding surgical centers," said Bouchard-Isackson. "We offer the convenience and comfort of an ambulatory surgery center with all the benefits of a hospital."

Patients and their families will experience greater privacy in pre-operative rooms, access to an outdoor garden with seating and proximity to the cafeteria, Joe's Java coffee shop and the retail area of the hospital. The waiting room is made up of semi-private family niches with personal flat screen televisions. Paging systems will be available for families to be alerted when their loved one is out of surgery.

The two story addition broke ground in November 2012. The first floor will include nine operating rooms, 32 patient preparation and recovery bays, reception and waiting areas, consultation rooms and office space. The second floor will include one hybrid operating room with space to add on for future needs.

As part of St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor's robust energy reduction strategy, the new facility incorporates the latest energy-saving building components such as sensors and variable speed devices that automatically reduce the heating, ventilation, air-conditioning and lighting systems to ramp up and down based on use.

The Outpatient Surgery Center is located on the St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor campus adjacent to the Helen S. and Marion S. DeWeese M.D. Surgery Pavilion, located at 5360 McAuley Drive, in Ypsilanti, Mich.

Many donors played an integral role in the development of the Outpatient Surgery Center including Anesthesia Associates of Ann Arbor and Huron Valley Radiology. In addition, the Outpatient Surgery Center was the beneficiary of the 2011 St. Joe's Holiday Ball, thanks in large part to that year's chairs Julie and Rod Beer.
