Midwifery as practiced by Certified Nurse-Midwives (CNMs) encompasses primary care for women across the lifespan from adolescence beyond menopause, with a special emphasis on pregnancy, childbirth, and gynecologic and reproductive health. Midwives perform comprehensive physical exams, prescribe medications, order laboratory and other diagnostic tests, and provide health and wellness education and counseling. CNMs follow the philosophy that every individual has the right to safe, satisfying health care with respect for human dignity and cultural variations. The Certified Nurse Midwives at Saint Joseph Mercy Health System work in partnership with women to support and empower them and to protect the natural process of birth. We provide safe, sensitive and personal obstetrical and gynecological care and believe that health education for women is essential in promoting a lifetime of wellness.
Certified Nurse Midwives (CNMs) are educated in the two practices of nursing and midwifery and possess evidence of certification according to the requirements of the American College of Nurse-Midwives The Certified Nurse Midwives at St. Joe’s believe that childbirth is normal, healthy and family-centered, and we focus on providing women with superior education in order to enhance their self-reliance in making decisions related to childbirth and overall health.
Certified Nurse Midwife services include:
- Continuous hands-on care and support during labor and delivery
- Education regarding women’s health and pregnancy
- Routine annual exams (pap smear, breast exam)
- Assistance in family planning and prescription
